End Notes
TIMELINE OF THE SCHUTZSTAFFEL(visual)--I really wanted to be able to pinpoint all of the major events surrounding the SS. My thinking was that with an understanding of the events and their order, focusing in on one person would become easier and more understandable. What better way to do it than a timeline? My research and dates came from the articles off History.com and Alphahistory.com where I took down the most important dates then put them all in a timeline.
WHY JEWS SHOULD BE ELIMINATED: SUPPORT THE FINAL SOLUTION(blog post)--Because blog posts are often persuasive, I chose to do a blog post as to the reasons why people believed that the Jews should be eliminated. “Motivations Behind The Holocaust:
German Nationalism And Economic Growth” was my main source of information because it listed and tried to explain the hatred towards Jews. I also gathered pictures for each point.
DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES?(recipe)--After reading my articles, I learned that there was A LOT that was required in order to be a member of the SS. How better to show it than a recipe? A majority of my research came from an article off History.com which discussed the SS as a whole and the requirements in order to be a member. By doing a recipe, I feel like I was able to truly capture what went into being a member of the SS.
RECRUITMENT POSTER(visual)--Because of the rapid growth of the SS and how many members it did end up having, I wanted to do something to show the amount of effort that went into retrieving these members. Both the articles “The SS” and “Schutzstaffel – the SS” discussed the recruitment process. While yes, individual people were also recruited, a lot of times it was just popularity and the awareness of the organization that got them its people.
THE DECISION OF A LIFETIME(memoir)--After writing all my other pieces, I wrote the memoir which connected all the dots. I wanted to make my memoir give the overall story and then have the other pieces focus in more on specific events. The research that went into my memoir was just the research that went into all of my other pieces and everything was just connected in the memoir.
THE LETTER(vignette)--For my vignette, I told the story of him receiving the letter of recruitment. In order to show the emotions of him and everyone around, story form was the best. Most of my research came from “THE SS” which mentioned how Hitler requested each city’s best men to work for the SS at the beginning.
THE KILLING(poem)--Since I wanted to show the fear from the point of view of the Jews that were being killed, but I was writing from the voice of the soldier, I chose a two voice poem in order to get both sides. While I am not sure if a soldier actually ever let a Jew go, I was inspired by “A FORGOTTEN SUITCASE: THE MANTELLO RESCUE MISSION” which discussed how an El Salvadoran diplomat was able to save Jews being persecuted in Germany by helping them prove they were from another country.
THOUGHTS(stream of consciousness)--In order to get his immediate reaction following the shooting, I did a stream of consciousness to show how his thoughts were all over the place. My research primarily came from “Motivations Behind The Holocaust:
German Nationalism And Economic Growth” which discussed the motives behind anti-Semitism. I integrated this in when he was trying to figure out why he could not shoot the Jew.
AFTER(poem)--Similar to “Adjustment”, I chose to do two poems on a similar topic. After all of my research, I felt like the time after the war and the effects it had were some things that deserved to be discussed and shown. A poem is best for this topic because of the amount of emotion I was able to convey and how I was truly able to get across the struggle and suffering of trying to adjust after the war.
ADJUSTMENT(poem)--For this topic, I chose to do a poem to show the despair and anger which had been driven into his heart and actions. I really wanted to show how hard adjusting back into society and everyday life was. Most of my research and inspiration came from “Hitler's Warrior: The Life and Wars of SS Colonel Jochen Peiper” which mentioned how Peiper was never able to escape his past.
